Perinatal Therapy
What is Perinatal Therapy?
Perinatal mental health refers to a woman’s emotional health during her pregnancy and post partum period. Perinatal means right before and right after your baby is born. This type of counseling is focused on supporting women (and couples) on their journey into parenthood. Although expecting a child is often a time of excitement you may also experience times of isolation and stress. The process of conceiving, pregnancy, and birth, have drastic effects on your hormones, body, and mental health. Here is a quick guide to see if perinatal therapy is right for you.
Do you find yourself:
Having difficulty sleeping
Unwarranted crying spells
Irrational thoughts and fears
Feelings of emptiness or melancholy
Difficulty concentrating and completing tasks
Feeling overstimulated and touched out
A disconnect from once meaningful relationships
Moodiness and Irritability
Difficulty bonding with your baby
Fear of allowing anyone other than yourself to care for your baby
Feeding challenges, guilt, or remorse
Feelings of resentment or jealousy
Questioning “why me”
Nightmares
Panic Attacks
You don’t need to go through this alone. Bringing a child into the world can bring up past trauma you thought you’ve moved on from. It can also drastically change the way we view ourselves, relationships, and the world around us. Do you feel like you’re drowning, but don’t know where to start to feel better? Do you stay up at night hating yourself for not having it all together? You can get through this, and you no longer have to do it alone.
